Grapes have been grown in the Spanish region of Priorat since the 12th century, but only gained world recognition in the 1990’s. In 2009, Priorat was elevated to DOCa status, the country’s highest level of wine denomination, and shared only with Rioja. In the year 2000 the Melis winery was founded, and their team began restoring the ancient terraced vineyards, mostly planted to Carinena.
