Fortified!
Rescheduled from last session! Fortified Wines are so named for the process in which they are made. Just like Frosted Flakes are “fortified” with extra vitamins and minerals, certain wines can be fortified with extra alcohol! Fortified wines were created back in the 16th and 17th centuries as a way of protecting regular table wines that were being shipped on long sea voyages. Although the need for fortification is no longer required for modern wines, fortified wines have remained one of the most enjoyable categories of wine. From Port to Sherry to Madeira, you’ll be sure to find some new favorites. Expect some tasty treats alongside, including chocolate!

The Rhône Rangers
Rescheduled from last session! “The Rhône Rangers” refer to the California wineries that are specializing in the grape varieties of the Rhône Valley of France. The name is a pun on The Lone Ranger, and was coined by Wine Spectator to describe Randall Grahm for their 1989 April 15 issue, which featured Grahm dressed as the Lone Ranger! The name was subsequently used for other winemakers doing the same. These wineries are making wine from vines that were transported from the Rhône Valley years ago. The whites are mainly made from viognier, marsanne and roussanne, and the reds are made from syrah, grenache, mourvèdre and cinsault. Tasty stuff!

We just can’t get enough of Portugal! And there are always great new wines showing up. Our selection of Portuguese wines has increased three-fold, and it is no surprise. The secret is out. Regional names that used to be very foreign like Vinho Verde, Dao, Lisboa, Bairrada and Alentejo have become mainstream wine-speak. And those hard to pronounce grapes like alfrocheiro, jaen, aragonez and trincadeira are no longer scary. Bottom line – these wines are some of the best values in the wine stores today. Off-The-Beaten-Path, France
Our “OTBP” Series has become a very popular one. Wines that are “Off The Beaten Path” are not your mainstream choices, but can be surprising finds. And France is loaded with them. Regions like Limoux, Minervois, Savoie and the Côtes Catalanes may not be as famous as the worshipped regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux, but they have “terroir” and grapes that speak for themselves. And they can also be very affordable! Join us for an evening of fun wines and tasty French foods while we cover some more territory on the French wine map.

Discovering Sake
We are thrilled to announce our very first Sake class at Marketview Liquor! This is another category that has grown immensely over the past few years. Sake is an alcoholic beverage that is made by fermenting rice that has been “polished” to remove the bran. Despite the name Japanese rice wine, Sake, and indeed any East Asian rice wine (such as huangjiu and cheongju), is produced by a brewing process more akin to that of beer, where starch is converted into sugars that ferment into alcohol. It is all so fascinating! Join Holly and special guest, Curtis Eaton from Vintus Wines, as we explore the fermentation process, discuss the different categories of Sake, and of course – taste some good Sake food pairings!

Cabernet Franc for Summer Grilling
Cabernet Franc is most often thought of as a blending grape, no doubt due to its prowess in the worshipped red wines of the Bordeaux region of France and the Meritage wines of America. However, certain regions of the world have allowed it to shine on its own – such as the Loire Valley of France, the Finger Lakes of New York State, the Western Cape of South Africa, and the Mendoza region of Argentina. Cab Franc is no slouch, and can produce surprisingly rich wines that are lighter in tannin and a great choice for a warmer weather. Plus, they are incredibly versatile when it comes to pairing with your favorite barbecue dishes.

Update on Oregon
Oregon is the fourth largest wine producing state in the nation (behind #1 California, #2 Washington, and #3 New York). The western border of Oregon is the Pacific Ocean. To the south is California, and to the north is Washington State. There is a beautiful valley that lies between the Coastal Mountain Range (west) and the Cascade Mountains that run through the state (inland east). The latitude allows for long hours of summer sunshine, but the winds can bring in some pretty damp ocean weather. Some say that the conditions in Oregon are reminiscent of those in Burgundy, France. It is no wonder that the white Chardonnay and the red Pinot Noir grapes are standouts here. Another signature white is Pinot Gris, a grape that also produces great wines in Alsace, France. After a string of fantastic vintages, its time for us to taste some of the state’s best!
