The Rhône Valley of France

One of our most popular classes is back again! It’s been a little while since we visited the vineyards of the Rhône Valley – one of the great wine regions of France. The Rhône river starts high in the Swiss Alps, flows into Lake Geneva, and then continues for 250 miles until it empties into the Mediterranean, just west of Marseille. In the Northern Rhône, you’ll find incredible reds made from the syrah grape in villages like Crozes-Hermitage. In the Southern Rhône, you find amazing blends of grenache, syrah, mourvedre and cinsault in the villages of the Côtes-du- Rhône, Gigondas, Lirac and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are great reds to have on hand for chilly winter nights!

Washington State Wines

The Presidents Day holiday is Monday of this week, but the actual birthday of George Washington, namesake of The Evergreen State, is Feb. 22. In either case, both are fine enough excuses to taste some awesome wines. Washington’s premium wine industry began in the 1960s. Today, it is the nation’s second largest wine producer (behind California). The majority of the state’s wine grapes are planted east of the Cascade Range in the Columbia Valley appellation, which encompasses the Yakima Valley and Walla Walla appellations. The climate and soils produce grapes with intense fruit flavors and high natural acidity. Washington’s vineyards straddle the 46th and 47th parallels – approximately the same latitude as Bordeaux! We’ll check out the major wine regions and taste our way through the signature whites and reds.

Gewürztraminer

We have a lot of red wines classes on the roster, mainly because its winter! But we don’t want to forget about the good winter whites. Gewürztraminer originated in the northern part of Italy, specifically near the village of Tramin, where it was called the “traminer” grape. When it traveled to Germany, it was renamed “gewürztraminer”. The pre-fix “Gewürz” translates to “spice”, which perfectly describes the flavors in the wine. This doesn’t mean spicy in terms of jalapeno pepper, but instead spicy in terms of baking flavors, like clove, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. It is the trademark of a good Gewürztraminer, and once you get hooked, you’ll be in love for life! Due to its spicy character, it tends to pair well with spicy foods – Thai, Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Moroccan and Cajun dishes are all great matches for Gewürztraminer.

Off The Beaten Path Spain

Our “OTBP” Series has become a popular one. Wines that are “Off The Beaten Path” are not your mainstream choices, but can be surprising finds. And Spain is loaded with them. Regions like Toro, Mencia, Alicante and La Mancha may not be as famous as the worshipped regions of Rioja and Jerez, but they have “terroir” and grapes that speak for themselves. And they can also be some incredible values! Join us for an evening of fun wines and tasty tapas while we cover some more territory on the Spanish wine map.

West Coast Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the grape that made the Burgundy region of France famous. The wines there are usually named after the village or the vineyard, and they definitely transfer the taste of the place to the glass. This grape takes on a different personality on the West Coast of United States – specifically California and Oregon. While temperatures may be a bit higher, the producers here benefit from a strong Pacific Ocean influence, leading to cool nights and fog in key regions. This helps to preserve Pinot’s inherent acidity while bringing that beautiful ripe fruit to the front. We’ll visit some of the best “terroirs” of the west and see how Pinot Noir shows off its “New World” attire!

Life is a Cabernet!

Here is another popular grape that we haven’t visited in awhile. And wow – do we have a LOT of new ones! Cabernet Sauvignon produces a wine that has earned its spot as one of the richest and fullest-bodied red wines in the world. It is a “red wine drinkers” favorite. The grape is a cross between the white sauvignon blanc and the red cabernet franc and has its origins in the Bordeaux region of France. But Cabernet Sauvignon is now growing well in other incredible “terroirs” outside of Europe – the most noteworthy of which include Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and the United States! We will taste a variety of Cabs from around the world and sip them alongside some cabernet-friendly foods.

A Taste of Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna is considered one of the richest regions of Italy with regards to its gastronomic and wine-making traditions! The region lies in northern Italy, extending from the Apennine Mountains in the south to the Po River in the north. It is one of the most fertile and productive regions of Italy, thanks to the mitigating effect that the Adriatic Sea has on the coastal climate. Although the wines of the region are not as well-known as the wines of neighboring Tuscany, there are definitely some good finds! And we’ll have some traditional Italian treats to pair alongside.

Wines for Easter

Recommending wines for Easter dinner is like recommending wines for Thanksgiving. It’s really an open book, because the feast can include so many different flavors. Whereas Thanksgiving wines are the ultimate segue into cold weather and comforting indoor wines, Easter tends to be the segue into the rebirth of warmth, and the heavenly scents of spring. So I like to keep it light and colorful, with a focus on characteristics that mimic flowers, herbs and an overall “green” theme. As you are on the hunt for wines to accompany your family gathering, join us to taste an array of possibilities. Try something different! I mean, you never want to put all of your eggs in one basket.

Finger Lakes Single-Vineyard Rieslings

Hundreds of thousands of years in the making, the Finger Lakes were carved out by successive waves of glaciers that passed through the region. They left large and deep fresh water lakes and the soil deposits that have become gifts to our winemakers! Riesling is a stand-out for sure, and most wineries have a signature version that blends multiple lots of harvested grapes from around the Finger Lakes. But over time, certain vineyards have stood out among others. This has led to more bottlings of “SINGLE VINEYARD” wines that truly evoke a unique sense of place. Join us for this fun study of FLX terroir!
